Split Testing

Split testing, also called A/B testing, is the process of comparing two versions of a page element, offer, or funnel step to see which one produces more conversions. You send part of your traffic to version A, part to version B, measure a defined goal such as click-through rate, form completions, checkout starts, or purchases, and keep the winner based on actual performance.

Why split testing matters for conversion growth

Split testing matters because it replaces opinion with evidence. Teams often debate headlines, CTA buttons, form length, pricing presentation, and page layout based on preference. A clean test shows what your audience actually responds to. For marketers and ecommerce teams, that means less wasted spend, stronger landing page efficiency, and better return from the same traffic volume.

It is especially valuable when small changes affect expensive funnel stages. Improving CTR from an ad-to-landing-page message match, increasing lead form completion rate, or lifting checkout conversion by even a few percentage points can create meaningful revenue gains without increasing acquisition costs.

What to test first

High-impact landing page elements

Start with elements that directly influence user action: the main headline, subheadline, primary CTA, hero image, social proof placement, offer framing, and form design. On lead generation pages, form fields and CTA copy often produce fast wins. On ecommerce pages, product page messaging, price anchoring, shipping callouts, and add-to-cart button treatment are common priorities.

Offers and funnel friction

Do not limit testing to design details. Test the offer itself: free demo versus free audit, percentage discount versus fixed-value discount, monthly versus annual framing, or short form versus multi-step form. In many funnels, the biggest lift comes from reducing friction or making the value proposition clearer, not changing button colors.

How to run a useful split test

Test one meaningful variable at a time, define a primary conversion metric before launch, and send comparable traffic to each version. Avoid ending a test too early because of a short-term spike. The goal is a reliable decision, not a flattering screenshot. Keep the rest of the page stable so you can attribute the result to the change you made.

A practical example: a SaaS company runs paid traffic to a demo request page. Version A uses the headline β€œBook a Demo.” Version B uses β€œSee How to Cut CPA Without More Spend,” adds three proof points above the form, and reduces the form from six fields to three. If version B increases form completion rate by 22% while lead quality stays stable, that is a commercially useful lift worth rolling out across campaigns.

At Conversion Bros, split testing is most effective when tied to a clear hypothesis, a measurable funnel step, and a business outcome such as lower cost per lead, higher average order value, or more qualified pipeline.
